Barcelona star Lionel Messi and his father Jorge Horacio have been sentenced to 21 months in prison for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009.
However, the 29-year-old footballer and his father who were found guilty of three counts of tax fraud in Wednesday’s ruling by the court in Barcelona will not spend any time behind bars due to their clean criminal record and under the Spanish system, prison terms of under two years can be served under probation.
The sentence can be appealed against via the Spanish supreme court.
