Bode was d closest to me among all d choir members.Icould seein him a younger brother i never had.My school was not so far to d church,so sometimesafter serviceor singing practise he would say “aunty Sewa,i’mcoming to urplace to eat o”. I would tell him to come, since i reallydidntknow how to prepare one man meal,i was alwayshaving leftover. He was only 20yrs old then, while i was 24.He was a 200levelstudent of College of education,Okene, and a native ofOyanwhere i was serving. When i first got to d church, his school was onbreak, before wecould really got to know each other,d break was over, sohe wentback to school.About a month after he left,i saw him in church onesundaymorning.I asked him why he came home so soon, hetold me hehad not paid his school fees and dt his parents were notable togive him d money.I got to know dt his dad was an old farmer, and hismum, apetty trader at Oyan market.Money was never my problem, bcs besides d allowance iwasreceiving from NYSC,my dad was always sendingmoney into myaccount without my sisters’ knowledge. He would say hedidntwant me to suffer since i was far from home. So,i asked him d amount he needed. He told me,and itold him tocome and meet me in school d next day,so we could goto banktogether to withdraw d money.I withdrew almost everything i had in my account, gavehim hisschool fees, transport fare and a token as pocketmoney. He wasvery happy. His mum came later to show her appreciation on behalfof dfamily.Dt was what really brought us closer.Wheneverhe wasaway inschool,he would be sending text messages tome, thanking me forhelping him.Sometimes,he would send me message dthe went tobed d previous night with an empty stomach, out ofcompassion, iwould quickly send him any amount i could afford, tobuyfoodstuff, and again,he would appreciate me.Soon,we were on christmas break.I didnt want totravel, but mydad insisted i should come to Lagos. After d break,i was supposed to return to Oyan injanuary, daddy couldnt give me enough money as he hadspent alot during d festive season,he expected me to still havesomemoney in my bank account,he was taken aback whenhe askedme how much i had with me and i answered “Nothingsir”.“U dont mean it!.What are u using money for?.Are ufeedingmore than ur mouth?.What did u do with d money i sentto uraccount last month?….Hun?.Tell me!.”Mummy and sis Temi heard him as he was talking tome inannoyance.Sis Temi came with her husband and daughter to visitourparents. She was busy chatting with mum, when theyhearddaddy raising his voice.D moment she heard dt dad was sending money tome, she said“Da-dd-y!.So u’ve been sending money to Sewa everymonth!!..I was d first person to go on service in dshouse, iremember if i didnt ask u for money,u wouldnt giveme, and iwould have to give u d details of what i needed d moneyfor, before u would give it.”“And u (turning to me) what are u spending moneyon?.Have ubought a plot of land?.Oh!..u want to build a house inOyan?.Isdt not so?”Watch out for part 3.Keep connected.Friday at 4:27pm·P
